With a singular directorial approach, Woo reinvented the conventions of action cinema, its visual language and dramatic codes. While the festival’s full lineup will be announced in late June, Bloody Disgusting has the first wave of titles and a special Career Achievement Award for a hugely influential Hong Kong artist whose extraordinary work was foundational to the festival’s formation. The Fantasia International Film Festival is heading back to theaters this year, celebrating its 26th edition with a dynamic in-person program of screenings, workshops, and launch events running from July 14 through August 3, 2022. In Cooties, the horror works, the comedy works, but all that drama keeps getting in the way. The horror aspect takes a backseat for entire chunks of the film, and rather than focus on the stronger comedy elements, the filmmakers kill screen time with tedious melodrama. But frustratingly, Milott and Murnion repeatedly follow up a hysterical scene with an incredibly bland one. At first glance, Cooties has the potential to be the next Shaun of the Dead…but it can’t quite get there.ĭon’t get me wrong, Cooties has got plenty to offer––a few of its scenes are destined to go down as cult classics. All of the actors seem game for anything. Most of the players get their moments to shine, but some obvious padding in the second act makes one wonder if the filmmakers knew where their bread was buttered. Jorge Garcia, Jack Brayer, and a severely under-utilized Nasim Padrad round out the cast. The reliably adorable Alison Pill plays Wood’s potential love interest. Rainn Wilson, flaunting a handlebar mustache and buttloads of attitude, is an alpha male gym teacher. Directors Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion run with the premise, resulting in a pleasantly diverting genre exercise that can’t quite take full advantage of its eclectic cast.Įlijah Wood stars is a substitute teacher at the wrong place, at the wrong time. The high-concept premise has a motley cast of Junior High teachers fighting back against a hoard of zombified tweeners that has infected the school. Tracy (Jack McBrayer), in a line that has McBrayer's name written all over it, says he just wanted a bunny.Cooties, a horror/comedy from Saw creator Leigh Whannell, is scatter-shot with enough top-notch moments to almost make you forget that the movie as a whole isn’t nearly as good as it could have been. Faced with death, Rebekkah (Nasim Pedrad) wishes she had gotten the chance to fire an Uzi. But Wood's quiet timidity makes him a winning anti-hero (has it really been 22 years since "The Good Son"?!), and the supporting cast has fun with well-written, ridiculous characters. Why the janitor had to be a stereotypical Japanese man with extensive martial arts abilities, I don't know. It's also low on surprises, eventually wheezing a little as it works to reach the end of just 84 minutes. A movie that turns pre-pubescent youngsters into rabid maniacs shouldn't take itself too seriously (this certainly isn't a discussion of adults' fear of what children are capable of), and "Cooties" doesn't. From there the adults and a few lucky students uninfected by the shared ills of a tainted chicken nugget hunker down and kick some bloodthirsty, juvenile ass, which might be unpleasant to watch if first-time directors Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion didn't keep the tone playfully absurd. "Oh, look: carnage," he says after looking out the window and seeing that the children on the blacktop have become hungry in ways no kid should ever be.

As a strange teacher who reads a book called "How to have a normal conversation" in the faculty lounge, co-writer Leigh Whannell ("Saw," "Insidious") gives himself many of the best lines.
